"Welcome Home" is a new work by local playwright Sam Farnsworth and is based on a story by JS, Hobbs that weaves together the true tales of veterans from Central and Western Massachusetts.
"Welcome Home" tells the story of four veterans (two Vietnam era, two post-9/11 era) who gather to play cards. Week after week they quietly go about this ritual (with a few funny stories thrown in to break the silence) until one week a member of the group decides to get less superficial and much more personal. The fallout changes the dynamics as each veteran explores what it means to come home from service to our country.
Based on a story by JS, Hobbs, "Welcome Home" is a project of Careforthetroops.org. Founder and facilitator Beverly Prestwood-Taylor says, "We are very excited about this production. Our hope is that it will serve as an instrument of healing for the veterans who told us their stories, the veterans who come and experience these stories, and the general population who wish to be better allies to the veterans in their lives. If 'Welcome Home' inspires other veterans to 'go deeper,' I believe we will have accomplished a vital part of our mission."
"Welcome Home" is directed by JS, Hobbs and will have three performances at Monson Memorial Hall, 198 Main St., Monson, Mass. The play will be performed Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. Get tickets here or call Cynthia LaBombard, 413-967-3887.
